We have been able to isolate the views of members in Northern Ireland from the survey, providing valuable insights into the needs and expectations of our members.

The findings reveal key areas where the Institute can enhance its offering, including professional development opportunities, networking events, career support, and well-being initiatives. Below is an overview of what members want most from Chartered Accountants Ireland.

Preferred Events and Engagement Opportunities

The survey showed that public sector members do value opportunities for continuous learning and professional networking. Nearly 70% of respondents expressed interest in attending Institute events, particularly those focused on leadership development, regulatory updates, and emerging technologies.

Networking is also valued by a majority of members, with 60% of members favouring structured events such as panel discussions, industry roundtables, and mentorship opportunities. Some members emphasised the importance of cross-sector networking, allowing them to engage with professionals outside of their departmental contacts.

Well-being and work-life balance initiatives are also of interest. Around 52% of respondents expressed interest in well-being programmes, including stress management workshops, mental health awareness sessions, and flexible learning formats that can accommodate busy work/life schedules.

Support for Career Growth and Professional Development

Members highlighted a desire for career development support from Chartered Accountants Ireland. Over 65% of respondents want access to more structured CPD (Continuing Professional Development) programmes, with a preference for online and on-demand learning options. Many members also called for tailored learning experiences that align with their specific career paths, whether in audit, tax, consulting, or industry roles.

Another key finding is the demand for mentorship and career guidance. More than 55% of members believe that a structured mentorship programme would be beneficial, connecting early-career accountants with experienced professionals who can provide advice and insights on career progression.

Job market support was also highlighted in responses. Members expressed interest in more career advisory services and job placement assistance to better support members at different stages of their professional journey.

Enhancing Member Services and Community Engagement

Beyond professional development, members wanted Chartered Accountants Ireland to play a strong role in fostering a sense of community. Over half of respondents called for more local Ulster Society events and informal networking gatherings to strengthen relationships among members.

Technology and accessibility were also mentioned as areas for activity. Many members would like enhanced digital services, such as an improved online portal, virtual networking options, and more interactive learning platforms.

Conclusion

First of all, the response from members has been very encouraging. The numbers taking part were impressive. Overall, 50% of members were ‘satisfied’ or ‘very satisfied’ with Institute events and initiatives. 8% were ‘unsatisfied’ or ‘very unsatisfied’.

Just under two thirds of public sector members had their professional fees paid by their employer.

The survey findings provide clear guidance on how the Institute and Ulster Society can enhance its services to public sector members.

The results have been analysed by the Ulster Society Public Sector Sub-Committee and the findings have informed the programme of events and initiatives for the year ahead.

We’re very thankful to all of the members who took part in the survey, it has really helped bring focus to both the technical and soft skills support which members value. We anticipate that members will see that influence play out, not just in Ulster Society initiatives but in the Institute’s programme as well.

Public sector members should be aware that the Ulster Society has launched a page on its website dedicated to the public sector. Members will be able to find contacts, recordings and articles relevant to the sector.
