Post qualification diploma - ICAI launches Dip IFRS

Author: Accountancy Ireland

The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland (ICAI) has joined forces with BPP Professional Education to launch a new Diploma in International Financial Reporting Standards (Dip IFRS). The impetus behind the move to global standards is to provide clear, transparent and transferable financial reporting for financial markets and investors. The Dip IFRS is ICAI’s first ever post-qualification diploma. Commenting at the launch in Dublin, Ronan O’Loughlin, Director of Education & Training at the Institute, explained the thinking behind it: “IFRS will revolutionise financial reporting. When fully adopted, they will introduce unprecedented transparency on an international basis in the preparation of company accounts. This can only be good news for shareholders and investors. That is why the ICAI lobbied the Irish Government to make a definitive move to the new standards and announce a changeover timetable.” “"ICAI has already been training our members for the introduction of IFRS through our Continuing Professional Development programme. The demand for courses has led us to believe that some members would be interested in a specialist qualification in this important area. We are delighted therefore to come together with education specialists BPP to provide this new Diploma.” Indeed ICAI members in their hundreds have been attending Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses at various locations around the country and the feedback from those courses has been the primary driver behind the new Diploma.

Who is the Dip IFRS for? The Dip. IFRS will be of interest to accountants looking for a deeper level of knowledge of the new standards - typically those employed in publicly quoted companies, auditors of PLCs, consultants offering services to international and multinational companies, and providers of company secretarial services for clients, according to ICAI Director of Education & Training, Ronan O’Loughlin. While primarily aimed at Chartered Accountants, Mr O’Loughlin confirms that the Dip. IFRS is open to members of other bodies who meet the basic entry requirements. Unlike CPD, the Dip IFRS will involve assessment of students who will be required to attend tuition, complete course assignments, and sit an examination. Assessment leading to the award of the new Diploma will be independently carried out thereby ensuring that the qualification is of the highest standard.

Course duration and structure The first students have already enrolled and will be sitting their examination in November. The course is part time running over five Friday / Saturdays (approximately to 10 days).so as to minimise the impact on students by combining a work day (afternoon / evening) with a weekend day (Saturday). While the first course is running Dublin, it is intended to run subsequent courses at venues around the country subject to demand. A distance learning / self study option is also being offered by ICAI. Fees range for the Dip. IFRS range from €3200 for the full course, to €1500 for the distance learning option, to €500 for the course documentation only. Readers interested in finding out more are invited to email ifrsquery@icai.ie.
